Top 5 Films of 1999

Crooked Table Podcast: Episode 132 — Our Top 5 Films of 1999 (with Kai Yaniz)

A year after helping us break down our favorite movies of 1998, Kai Yaniz of BeBold-BeBrave.com returns to take aim at one of the most important years in cinema: 1999. Twenty years ago, so many bold, risk-taking movies hit the big screen, and while we may not necessarily be fans of all those iconic releases, this milestone felt like a great opportunity to pay tribute to what many have considered one of the finest years at the theater.

If you’ve been listening to our recent episodes, then you know we’ve made it a point to discuss as many 1999 films as possible lately. These include entire episodes devoted to American Beauty, The Matrix (two episodes, in that case), Office Space, Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Man on the Moon and Fight Club. And we’re not done yet, with episodes on Eyes Wide Shut and Bowfinger in the pipeline as well.

For now, enjoy this longer-than-expected (what else is new, right?) episode on the year just before Y2K hit. Queue up the requisite Prince jam and then listen a thirty-something married couple try to recall the films of their youth while downing a bottle of Hope’s End Red Blend (not an affiliate, just a fan). And stay tuned for other flashback retrospectives in the future. Which year in the 1990s should we discuss next?
